Free Learning Technology
- Padlet - This free online web-based technology functions as a noticeboard where people can write and post stories, upload images, and comment on other people's posts. Various privacy settings and moderation controls exist to ensure that content posted is filtered and reviewed before being made public and accessible to anyone who can access the Padlet. In the classroom, Padlet can be utilized by teachers to have students post and discuss their thoughts or ideas on subject-related questions. Furthermore, teachers can have students ask questions or comment on other student's posts anonymously, which may encourage more questions to be asked as the identity of the writer/commenter is unknown.
Learning Activities
- Create a Padlet and post different digital scenarios students may encounter (such as social media copying trends, comment sections, or chatrooms from apps like Facebook or Discord). Then, on Padlet, have students sign up and create an account and choose the free account option, which gives them access and the ability to create their own Padlets. Afterward, have students comment and post their thoughts on how the depicted actions/behaviors may be dangerous, unethical, or revealing about a person's identity, be it age, gender, or general address. This activity covers standards 1.2.a 1.2c and 1.2d.
- In a blank Padlet, have students create and post their own list of made-up questions that try to be as inclusive as possible. Then, have students respond to their peer's questions, answering as many questions as possible. This activity highlights inclusivity, what it may look like, and how others can improve their future questions and discussions to be more inclusive. This activity covers standard 1.2.b.
